“American Idol” Recap

Wednesday’s episode of American Idol held some surprises for everyone. The atmosphere was more friendly, and though the pressure is on for the final eight to perform even better, these contestants seemed to enjoy themselves more.

J Lo seemed to be a little more peppy, and she dressed to suit the 80s theme the contestants had to sing from. She seemed to enjoy most of the song choices, many probably having come from her youth.

The camera panned in on DeAndre Brackensick sitting in the audience, his spot for the beginning of his performance. If you have ever wondered how people in the audience are chosen for a minute of fame, it’s because they are chosen by Nigel Lythgoe. Lythgoe is the executive producer for the show. To get someone on TV, he simply points them out, and the camera follows.

The camera got a shot of Elise Testone getting ready for her performance by shaking her shoulders out. While she is preparing herself, she gets a sample of Ryan Seacrest, as he shows off his falsetto.

Seacrest appeared to have caught the good vibe that was going around, because he could also be seen giving the crowd controllers high fives. When the camera panned in on a woman holding a sign that read “obsessed with Seacrest”, she was escorted down for a front row seat.

Gwen Stefani schooled her band mate, Tony Kanal, on the correct term for goosebumps for American Idol. It’s not goosebumps, it’s “goosies”, a term coined by Jennifer Lopez. When Jen heard Stefani correcting Kanal, she laughed. It was companionable camaraderie for everyone.

There was so much love in the air, that when Steven Tyler accidently rolled his chair over J Lo’s dress, the two hug to make up and Tyler played with her hair!

There was also a little romance, as Steven Tyler had a brief visit from his fiancee, Erin Brady, who took the occasion to sit on his lap. Meanwhile, Jennifer got a quick kiss from her boyfriend, Casper Smart, professional dancer.

Randy and Tommy Hilfiger had a photo moment and Skylar Laine earned her first standing ovation ever. She sang “Wind Beneath My Wings”.
Phil Phillips rocked the house with “That’s All” by Genesis. His performance was enjoyed so much by a small boy that he stood in his seat to move those in his row to stand with him.

Naimi Adedapo, last season’s top 11 finalist was seen in the crowd, as well. She has recently signed a record deal for her debut album, set to be released later this year. Steven Tyler noticed her first and got a hug. After she is seen, Lythgoe took her to speak with J Lo and Randy.

This episode was one to remember, with enough warm fuzziness to go around. No matter who is eliminated next, that contestant will leave with a smile on his or her face. The cast and crew of American Idol have proven they may have a tough exterior, but it covers a soft spot.
